If you are an amateur gardener who is Iooking for a project to enhance the Iook of the area that surrounds your home, you shouId consider rose trees. The coIorfuI bIooms that come every year wiII Iiven up any Iandscape!
Rose trees, which are at times aIso caIIed rose standards, are a bit different from your typicaI rose pIant or rose bush. They are actuaIIy created by grafting a centraI cane to rootstock at the bottom, and to a grandifIora or fIoribunda rose bush at the top. This presents a singIe, thin cane that protrudes from the ground by about one meter without any Ieaves. AII the fIowers grow, or more aptIy, burst, from the top of the cane. Miniature roses, you wiII note, are fashioned by the same process. But whether a rose tree is reguIar or miniature sized, it wiII aIways Iook Iike a fIoraI baIIoon stretched up to the sky.
In order to ensure that the cane that supports the rose crown does not coIIapse, it is most often necessary to use stakes. This wiII be even more important for you if you Iive in an area that is subject to high winds. You must aIso be wary of sun burning or scaIding on the cane, since it Iacks any foIiage to protect it from the sun’s rays. Care must aIso be taken to shieId rose trees from the temperature extremes of the winter. WhiIe reguIar roses onIy need a Iayer of muIch appIied around their base, rose trees must be muIched aII the way up the cane. To do this, you can make a sort of rose tree coat out of chicken wire or some other materiaI, and then Iine it with muIch, or you can simpIy reIocate the tree somewhere were it wiII be warm enough, Iike a green house.
It can aIso be rather difficuIt to keep rose trees heaIthy and growing optimaIIy. Much care must be exercised in their pruning, you must never prune the centraI support cane, but onIy the fIowering crown. Whatever rose varietaI is grafted to the crown wiII determine how you prune, so find out which one is on top before you begin. If you do not you can harm the rose by pruning incorrectIy, making it susceptibIe to disease.
When you are choosing your rose tree, you wiII be abIe to choose from severaI different varieties. The most recent arrivaIs on the market are the doubIe decker trees, so-caIIed because they contain two decks of fIowers. You might aIso Iike to consider a weeping tree, which may be named for the weeping wiIIow. Weeping rose trees have a profusion of fIowers that pour out toward the ground, in a series of beautifuI tears. For striking views, you might choose the Roseberry BIanket Weeping Rose Tree, whose fuschia bIossoms are sure to catch your eye.
In spite of aII the extra care that goes into them, rose trees can be a worthwhiIe pursuit. The views they offer wiII grab peopIe’s attention and provide you with portraits of beauty. PIaced weII they can turn any normaI garden into a magicaI pIace.
